It is a great turn of phrase. these practices really piss me off. fortunately we have one theater that hasn’t given into the dark side yet.

... and of course, the movie industry blames it all on piracy. It's pretty telling when someone would prefer to watch a jittery cam copy with hollow sound than bother with the theater's crap.

You make a great point, Vince. I think the line needs to be drawn at "inproper communication." For example, I was on a bus for 4 hours yesterday, and while the other 50 people were probably by themselves and trying to sleep/work/read, there was on couple that talked for the entire time, and could be heard from the entire bus. It was so bad this this girl's piercing voice could be heard through my Bose noise-canceling headphones. Would it be different if she was talking on the phone vs. her friend sitting next to her?

I often give a sigh of dissatisfaction whenever a new movie comes out that I really want to see for this exact reason. Moviegoing has become more like just watching TV than some sort of ceremonial event. People think it's perfectly OK to whip out their distracting flashlights (cellphones) and send text messages while in the theater. People think talking to the person next to them is perfectly fine, because hey... it isn't a cell phone. No one shows up on time because they're trying to avoid the thirty minute commercial barrage. It's just one big heaping pile of distractions for $10.50.

I prefer the "shut off phones" slide to be up there a good while. It gives people time to fish them out (and it may have been a while since they last did shut them off, so they may have to fiddle with it to remember how..)

In the future the slide will stay up as long as active wireless signals are detected within the room.
