I relate! I have a Treo 650 that is getting pretty ragged and the terrible camera really bugs me, but I cannot bring myself to even THINK about the ordeal it would be to transfer all my contacts. I have thousands.... Its not just friends, family, acquaintances and business contacts. I use my contacts database for so many things: passwords, banking information, contact details of tons of useful shops and businesses, insurance policy numbers and all sorts of other important info I want to keep in one central place.

I'm sure it will be a total nightmare.

When I posted the story on reddit, a commenter suggested iSync, but none of the companies (even Apple) brought it up. I guess I would have just needed to find the correct "phone to USB" cable somewhere though.

As far as how I backed up previously, it was all manual. A matter of having friends' numbers in my Yahoo address book, and hoping I didn't lose my phone. I've heard stories of people not being able to call their best friend when they lost their cell phone because they never had memorized their number.

Thanks for the comment Tony.

Hey, I'm curious, did anyone suggest iSync. I don't know if there's support for your phone but that would have been my first thought. There are a lot of supported phones and if you can use iSync you can grab your contacts from your phone and then push them to your Address book, then use iTunes to synch your iPhone. Done...

I did a quick search to see if your phone was supported and didn't find anything. How were you backing up your contacts to start with?
