I understand the problem Tom. Apple can be such a closed source of information, that it's hard to get any numbers from them. Similarly, companies with successful paid apps are gun-shy about releasing their numbers and sharing their success. Probably the best way to go about this might be immersing yourself further into the community and networking with other developers, who might be more willing to share some best practices.

One of the problems I have had is finding enough information about apps to make a business decision. Except in a couple of rare cases I have not found any real download data or ongoing ad data on sites. I was hoping to find out some data on some apps and then from that extrapolate (guess) what my app might do. So far no real data. The data does seem to indicate that most apps have very short lives. Since I am thinking about an ad supported model this is discouraging.

What about apps with transaction based revenue model? The model could either charge for the app or give it away for free. The bulk of the revenue would come from a per play/use/transaction fee. The billing infrastructure would need setup outside of apple (is that allowed). Do you know if there have been any successful uses of this model?
